We continue to have a persistent problem with dumped waste and people not properly disposing of rubbish. Disposing of dumped items has cost us around £2000. The council has now threatened to stop collecting our bins entirely because of continued misuse. This would mean paying a private waste contractor at considerable expense, and an increase in your service charges or rent.
We respectfully remind everyone of the following, and to show consideration for your neighbours and help us keep the place clean and tidy for everyone.
1. All rubbish must be BAGGED and placed INSIDE the bins
Anything not bagged and placed IN the bins attracts rats and WILL NOT BE COLLECTED. Bins obstructed by dumped items/rubbish WILL NOT BE COLLECTED, causing a problem for everyone. The council only collect waste INSIDE the bins, NOT left on the floor etc.
2. Items not permitted
The bins are for general household waste ONLY.
DO NOT leave items such as the following in or around the bins:
- Batteries, electrical items, appliances, fridges, light bulbs etc.
- Bulky waste: unwanted furniture, chairs, mattresses, cushions, toys, prams, scooters, bicycles, large plastic items and other household items such as ironing boards.
- Building waste such as plasterboard, bathroom/kitchen fittings, cabinets, glass, tiles, stones and rubble, scrap metal, wood, offcuts, carpet, lino, tools etc.
- Hazardous items such as chemicals, flammable liquid/oils, paints and solvents, gas canisters (even empty), explosive items, vehicle batteries, clinical waste etc.
- Commercial waste or anything not from your flat.
Leaving any of these items (or other non-household waste) in the bins means they will likely NOT BE COLLECTED until it has been removed, causing a problem for everyone.
3. Make space
- Please use all available bins. To make space in the bins, crush down packaging such as boxes, cans, plastic bottles/containers.
- Large boxes must be crushed down/cut up. If boxes etc. will not all fit in the bins, you may need to keep some until after the next collection.
4. Bulky / Other Waste
- To arrange a bulky waste collection, see: Barking & Dagenham Council Waste & Recycling.
- You are able to book a standard collection of up to 4 items for FREE.
- The collection reference number must be attached to the items and left on the day of collection OUTSIDE the front gates. (Not in the bin store)
- Items can also be taken to the nearby waste and recycling centre at Jenkins Lane (~5 mins away.)
5. Reuse and recycling
- Local charityTCL Reuse can collect furniture and appliances in good condition.
- Other items such as clothing, toys, household goods can be donated to local charity shops.
- It may also be worth asking on the residents WhatsApp group if someone else can make use of any unwanted items.
- Batteries, soft plastics and other items can be taken to local supermarkets or recycling points.
NEVER leave any items or bags of rubbish on ANY staircase or landing at any time. It is essential for everyone’s safety that your fire exit route is kept clear at all times. This includes bicycles, pushchairs etc. Items may be removed without warning.
We will be increasing the use of CCTV. Anyone seen dumping waste will be charged for the cost of disposal, plus administration charges. (Minimum £150). We will also contact landlords and letting agents to recover our costs from your deposit if items are dumped when moving out.
It is not fair to expect your neighbours to pay for and clear up your waste.
Thank you for your co-operation.
